GTA San Andreas Windows 11 Fix – Stop Crashes & Black Screen
Step-by-step troubleshooting guide for GTA San Andreas on Windows 11. Fix black screens, 30FPS frame limiter locks, and crash to desktop on startup.
If you are attempting to run GTA San Andreas on modern Windows 11 64-bit systems, you may experience unexpected crashes to desktop on startup, a frozen black screen, or stuttering mouse camera controls. Because GTA SA was built in 2004 for legacy Direct3D 9 architectures, Windows 11 requires a few essential compatibility patches.
Step 1: Install SilentPatch (Essential Fix)
SilentPatch is the single most important community plugin for GTA San Andreas PC. It resolves over 100 original engine bugs, fixes memory leaks, enables proper dual-core processor affinity, and prevents random desktop crashes.
- Download SilentPatchSA.zip from GitHub or GTAMods.
- Extract
SilentPatchSA.asiandSilentPatchSA.iniinto your root GTA SA directory. - Download a ASI Loader (
vorbisFile.dllorversion.dll) so the game loads the patch automatically.
Step 2: Enable DirectPlay in Windows 11 Features
- Press Win + R, type
optionalfeatures.exeand press Enter. - Scroll down to Legacy Components and expand the folder.
- Check the box next to DirectPlay.
- Click OK and restart your PC. DirectPlay is required for legacy DirectX 9 games to hook display drivers properly.
Step 3: Remove GTA_SA.SET File
If your game freezes on a black screen right after the intro logos, your user settings configuration file may be corrupted. Navigate to:
C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\gta_sa.set
Delete the gta_sa.set file and relaunch the game. A fresh default configuration file will automatically generate.
